Money Exchange at Bangkok Airport: Where to Get the Best Rate

Contents (15)

Short answer: the best exchange rates at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) are on Level B, the basement level next to the Airport Rail Link station, not at the booths in the arrivals hall. Orange SuperRich is to the left of the station, alongside competitors such as Kasikorn Bank. Compare the "We Buy" rate, bring large banknotes and your passport, and consider exchanging a larger amount here, since rates on the islands are usually lower.

Just landed at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) in Bangkok and need baht? Don't rush to exchange at the first counter you see on your way out. A classic first-timer mistake is exchanging at the money changers on the upper floors of the airport. The really good rates are waiting downstairs, by the train station.

Where's the best-value exchange at Bangkok airport?

The place is the airport's basement level (Level B), where you'll find the entrance to the Airport Rail Link, the train connecting the airport with the city center. There you'll find SuperRich alongside several competing exchange booths, and their rates are usually significantly better than those of the booths upstairs in the arrivals hall.

The good news: the rate here isn't just the best at the airport, it's among the highest anywhere in Thailand. If you're continuing to the islands, for example, the rate there is usually lower.

How to get to the exchange booths on Level B, step by step

  1. After border control and baggage claim, follow the signs for the train. "Train to City" signs are posted all over the airport.
  2. Take the escalator or lift down to the lowest level. Level B is two floors below the arrivals hall.
  3. Keep going until you see the train station. Don't go in.
  4. Head to the left side of the station. The SuperRich booth, considered to have the best rate at the airport, is to the left of the Airport Rail Link station.

Note: on the way you'll also see other booths on Level B, one of them right opposite the station entrance. Don't stop there; keep going left.

SuperRich at Suvarnabhumi: green or orange?

There are two brands with similar names. The green SuperRich branch at the airport has closed, but orange SuperRich still offers some of the best rates at the airport.

Compare rates before you exchange

SuperRich is a good starting point, but you don't have to stop there. Once you're on Level B, you'll see exchange booths on both sides of the walkway, and the competition between them works in your favor. One Thai bank, Kasikorn, has opened a branch in the cluster of booths by the train station and has recently offered some of the best rates at the airport. And sometimes the differences disappear completely: travelers have reported Happyrich, SuperRich and Kasikorn offering exactly the same rate.

How to compare properly:

  1. Look at the boards at every booth in the area before you take out any money. It takes two minutes.
  2. Compare the buying rate ("We Buy" / "Buying") for your currency, not the selling rate.
  3. Check the rate for the denomination of the banknotes you're holding.
  4. Compare only within Level B; there's no point going back upstairs.

Opening hours

According to Google, SuperRich on Level B is open every day from 05:00 to 00:00 (midnight). If you land late at night, it may be closed.

What you must bring to exchange money in Thailand

Your passport. Without it you can't exchange money, so have it ready in your hand.

Tips for a better baht rate

Large banknotes get a better rate. At SuperRich the best rate is only given for large notes, and small notes get a lower rate. Bring $100 bills or €200 notes.

How much to exchange at the airport? Because the rate in the airport basement is among the highest in Thailand, it pays to exchange a significant amount here, not just some starter cash. This is especially true if you're continuing to the islands, where the rate is usually lower.
