Black Friday 2026 falls on Friday, November 27, 2026, and Cyber Monday on Monday, November 30. Most stores and websites start their deals in mid-November. If you are flying abroad to shop, check two things before you go: whether the destination refunds sales tax to tourists, and how much your home country lets you bring back tax-free.

When are Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2026?
Black Friday 2026 is on Friday, November 27, 2026, the day after US Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday of November, and in 2026 it falls on November 26. Cyber Monday follows on Monday, November 30, 2026.
| Event | 2026 date | Day | What happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| Singles' Day (11.11) | Nov 11, 2026 | Wednesday | Huge sales on Chinese sites such as AliExpress |
| Thanksgiving | Nov 26, 2026 | Thursday | Many US stores are closed or open in the evening |
| Black Friday | Nov 27, 2026 | Friday | Peak discounts in stores and online |
| Small Business Saturday | Nov 28, 2026 | Saturday | Deals at small US businesses |
| Cyber Monday | Nov 30, 2026 | Monday | Peak discounts online |
Many stores in the US and Europe launch "early Black Friday" deals in mid-November. In Israel, where Friday is a short shopping day, many chains start their sales earlier in the week or run them for the whole week.
What is the difference between Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Singles' Day?
Black Friday is the big discount day for stores and websites, and Cyber Monday is the discount day for online shopping. Both started in the US around Thanksgiving and open the holiday shopping season. Today they are global events, and retailers in Europe and Israel take part too.
Singles' Day is a Chinese shopping day held on November 11. It is the biggest day on sites like AliExpress, so if you buy from China you may find better prices then than on Black Friday itself.
In practice, the lines between these days are blurring. Many sites run one continuous sale from November 11 to the end of the month. Track the price of the item from the start of November, so you know whether the Black Friday "discount" is real.
Is it worth flying abroad for Black Friday?
Flying abroad just for Black Friday pays off mainly if you buy a lot: gear for the whole family, winter clothing, or expensive items that are much cheaper abroad. If you only need a few things, ordering online from home usually saves more. The right calculation adds up flights, hotel, transport and any import tax you pay back home, and compares that with the savings.
Advantages of shopping Black Friday abroad:
- Lower base prices on clothing and brands, even before the discount
- Sizes and models that are not always sold at home
- Trying items on in the store, with no international return shipping
- Combining shopping with a holiday, especially over a long weekend
The downsides are real too. Stores are packed on Black Friday itself, flights and hotels in popular shopping cities cost more in late November, and anything above your home country's allowance is taxable. Common sizes sell out fast, especially on the first morning.
Where is the best place to shop on Black Friday abroad?
New York is the classic Black Friday destination, but Europe has one big advantage: VAT refunds for visitors from outside the EU. US discounts are deeper, but there is no tax refund. European discounts are milder, but if you spend above the minimum you get part of the VAT back.
| Destination | Discount depth | Tourist tax refund | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| New York, USA | Highest | None | Clothing and footwear under $110 per item are exempt from sales tax in NYC |
| London, UK | High | None since 2021 | Prices include 20% VAT that is not refunded |
| EU countries | Medium | Yes, above a per-store minimum | Customs stamp when leaving the EU, before check-in |
| Japan | Medium | Yes, refunded at the airport | Since Nov 1, 2026 you pay in full and get 10% back on departure |
Black Friday in New York
In New York City, clothing and footwear priced under $110 per item are exempt from sales tax. Above that, 8.875% sales tax is added at the register, because US price tags do not include tax. The exemption does not cover accessories such as bags and jewelry.
The biggest outlet in the area is Woodbury Common Premium Outlets, about an hour's drive from Manhattan. On regular days it is open 10:00 to 21:00, and Black Friday hours are posted on its website in the weeks before Thanksgiving. Many city stores are closed on Thanksgiving Day itself, so plan your shopping for Friday and the weekend.
Black Friday in Europe
Black Friday in Europe is weaker than in the US, but the VAT refund adds to the savings. Discounts at the big fashion chains usually reach 20% to 30%, and more at some brands. Base prices also differ a lot between countries: at Zara Greece, we found the same item costs on average 1.89 times more in Israel. See the full Zara Greece vs Israel price comparison.
Black Friday in Japan
Japan's Tax Free system changed on November 1, 2026: you pay the full price in the store and get the consumption tax back when you leave the country. The minimum is 5,000 yen per store per day. All the steps are in the Japan Tax Free 2026 guide.
How do you get a VAT refund in Europe?
Visitors who live outside the EU, including Israeli residents, can get a VAT refund on purchases in EU countries, as long as the spend in one store passes that country's minimum and the goods leave the EU. The actual refund is lower than the full VAT rate, because refund companies charge a fee.
| Country | Minimum spend in one store |
|---|---|
| France | €100.01 |
| Italy | €70.01 |
| Germany | €50.01 |
| Spain | No minimum |
Refund steps:
- Ask for a Tax Free form at the register and show your passport.
- Keep the receipt and form, and do not use the items before your flight.
- At your last EU airport, validate the forms at a customs desk or digital kiosk before check-in.
- Collect the money at the refund desk, or ask for a credit to your card.
A connecting flight inside the EU does not count: validation happens at your final exit point from the EU. If the goods are in a bag you already checked in, customs cannot see them and will not validate the form.
How much can you bring into Israel tax-free?
Every traveler aged two and over may bring goods for personal use or as gifts worth up to $200 into Israel without paying tax. The allowance is personal and cannot be pooled between family members. A single item worth more than $200 is taxed on its full value, not just on the difference.
If you live elsewhere, check your own country's customs allowance before you shop. For travelers landing at Ben Gurion Airport:
- Green channel is only for travelers with no taxable goods. Walking through it with goods above the allowance counts as a false declaration.
- Red channel is for anyone bringing goods above the allowance. You pay on the spot and leave with a receipt.
- Food counts toward the allowance, up to 3 kg in total and 1 kg per type.
- Tobacco and alcohol have a separate allowance, for travelers aged 18 and over only.
Keep all your receipts in one place before the flight home. In the red channel the tax is based on the item's value, and a clear receipt saves arguments about it. Current rules are on the Israel Tax Authority website.
How much tax do you pay on Black Friday online orders to Israel?
A parcel to Israel with goods worth up to $75 is tax-free, and above $75 you pay 18% VAT. The threshold went back to $75 on June 2, 2026, after a period when the exemption was higher. Many sites and forums still quote the old $130 or $150 limits, so do not rely on them.
| Value of goods in the parcel | What you pay |
|---|---|
| Up to $75 | No VAT, customs duty or purchase tax |
| $75 to $500 | 18% VAT |
| Over $500 | 18% VAT, and customs duty and purchase tax on some products |
The threshold is checked on the value of the goods only, as long as shipping is listed separately on the order. Once a parcel passes the threshold, VAT is charged on the goods and the shipping together. So an $80 order really costs almost $95 plus shipping, and sometimes a courier clearance fee too.
Common Black Friday shopping mistakes abroad
The most expensive mistake is looking only at the price tag and forgetting tax, fees and returns. These are the mistakes we see most often among people who fly abroad to shop in late November:
- Paying in your home currency at the register. When the card terminal offers to charge you in your own currency, that is dynamic currency conversion (DCC) at a poor rate. Always choose the local currency.
- Checking your bag before the Tax Free validation. Without seeing the goods, customs in Europe will not approve the refund.
- Buying one item over $200 and walking through the green channel in Israel. Tax applies to the whole amount, and the fine for not declaring is higher.
- Not checking the return policy. Many stores abroad accept returns, but not always from overseas and not always as a cash refund.
- Believing every "up to 70% off". The top discount usually applies to only a few items. Compare against the price from early November.
- Leaving roaming on your home SIM. Price comparisons, maps and store apps use a lot of data, and roaming from your home carrier is expensive.
Buying an iPhone in the US on Black Friday? Check the SIM
iPhones sold in the US are eSIM-only, with no tray for a physical SIM card. They work in other countries, but your home number has to be moved to an eSIM with your carrier. Details on the new models are in the iPhone 18 guide.
How do you stay online while shopping?
The cheapest way to stay connected abroad is an eSIM for your destination, installed before the flight and switched on when you land. You get internet from the first minute: maps to the outlet, price checks in the store, translation and store apps with coupons.
Your home number keeps working alongside it to receive text messages. This matters on Black Friday, because banks send a verification code for large online purchases. Turn off data roaming on your home line and keep data on the eSIM. The full explanation is in our guide to two numbers on one phone with eSIM.
FAQ
Is Black Friday on the same date worldwide?
Yes, Black Friday 2026 is November 27 in the US, Europe and Israel. Retailers in many countries start earlier, often a week or more before. International websites usually keep deals running until Cyber Monday, November 30, and some extend them into the first days of December.
Is there a tax refund for tourists in the US?
In most of the US there is no tax refund for tourists. The US has no national VAT, and sales tax added at the register is not refunded at the airport. In New York City you can still save on clothing and footwear, because items under $110 are exempt from city and state sales tax.
Can a family combine their allowances for one expensive item?
No, Israel's $200 allowance is personal and cannot be pooled. A family of four can bring four items of $200 each without tax, but not one item of $800. An item that costs more than $200 is taxed on its full value.
Should I pay by credit card or cash abroad?
In most cases, pay by credit card in the local currency. A card saves you from exchanging cash at a bad rate and keeps a record of each purchase for Tax Free forms and customs. If the terminal offers to charge you in your home currency, decline and pick the local currency.
Do flight prices go up in late November?
Yes, flights and hotels in popular shopping cities usually get more expensive around the Black Friday weekend. If you want to fly abroad to shop, booking a few weeks ahead saves money. Some airlines also run their own Black Friday sales on flights for later travel dates.
When should I install an eSIM before a shopping trip?
Install the eSIM at home, a day or two before the flight, on a stable Wi-Fi connection. Installation takes a few minutes, and the plan only starts when the phone connects to a network at your destination. That way you land with internet and reach the stores without hunting for Wi-Fi.
The bottom line
- Dates: Black Friday on Nov 27, 2026, Cyber Monday on Nov 30, Singles' Day on Nov 11.
- US vs Europe: deep US discounts with no tax refund, milder European discounts with a VAT refund.
- At Ben Gurion: $200 tax-free per traveler aged two and over, no pooling between family members.
- Online to Israel: tax-free up to $75 per parcel, 18% VAT above that.
