eSIM Data Plan vs. Daily Plan: Which Is Better Value for Travel?
Contents (11)
Short answer: for most travelers, a plan by gigabytes is better value: you pay for the data you need, and your whole trip fits within one validity period. A daily plan mainly suits people who use very large amounts of data every day and don't want to think about data at all.
What's the difference between the two types of plan?
- Plan by gigabytes: you get a fixed amount of data (for example 10GB) and a validity period to use it in (for example 30 days). You use the data at whatever pace suits you: a heavy day, then a light one.
- Plan by days: you pay for the number of days of your trip and get a data allowance each day. On some daily plans, speed drops once you hit the daily allowance, even when they're marketed as "unlimited".
| Plan by GB | Plan by days | |
|---|---|---|
| What you pay for | A fixed amount of data | A number of days |
| Daily flexibility | High: heavy and light days balance out | Fixed daily allowance |
| Best for | Most travelers, light to medium use | Very heavy daily use |
| What to check | Total data and validity | Daily allowance and speed after it |
The advantages of a plan by gigabytes
- You pay only for what you need. If you mainly use data for navigation, WhatsApp and social media, a small allowance is enough.
- Flexibility between days. A long sightseeing day with lots of navigation and photos is balanced out by a day at the hotel on Wi-Fi.
- Validity longer than the trip. At FlySim, GB plans come with 30 days of validity, so even a two-week trip fits comfortably.
- Lower price per gigabyte on bigger plans. The bigger the plan, the lower the price of each gigabyte.
When can a daily plan make sense?
- When you use very large amounts of data every day, for example long video streaming or remote work
- When you don't want to track your data at all
- When the trip is very short and your daily use is expected to be heavy
Before choosing a daily plan, check the daily allowance and what happens to your speed once you go over it. We look at this in more detail in unlimited daily eSIM plans: who are they really worth it for?
How much data do you need for your trip?
Your usage depends mainly on how you use your phone:
- Light use: WhatsApp, maps and checking email. Uses little data.
- Medium use: all of the above, plus social media, photos and the occasional video call.
- Heavy use: videos, stories, long video calls and hotspot sharing.
For example, for a 7-day trip with medium use, the plan calculator on our site estimates about 4.9GB. In the calculator you choose a destination, the number of days and your type of use, and get a recommendation for the right amount of data. Tips to make your data last
- Download maps for offline use before your flight.
- Turn off automatic download of photos and videos in WhatsApp.
- Back up photos to the cloud only when you're on Wi-Fi.
- Track your usage in your phone's cellular settings, which show how much data each line has used.
Frequently asked questions
When does the plan's validity start counting?
From the moment it's actually activated at your destination, not from the moment of purchase. That's why you can buy and install it in advance.
What happens when the data runs out?
Data through the eSIM stops. That's why it's worth choosing a plan with a little headroom beyond your estimate.
Does WhatsApp use a lot of data?
Text messages use very little. Video calls, photos and videos use much more. To keep WhatsApp on your home number while using a travel eSIM, see eSIM with two numbers at the same time.
Is a GB plan or a daily plan cheaper?
For light and medium use, a GB plan is almost always cheaper, because you don't pay for a daily allowance you don't use. A daily plan only wins when you'd use a large amount of data every single day.
