Can You Keep Your WhatsApp and Home Number With a Travel eSIM?
Contents (11)
Short answer: yes. With a travel eSIM you keep both your home number and your WhatsApp. The eSIM is added alongside your existing SIM rather than replacing it, and WhatsApp is linked to your phone number, not to the SIM you use for data, so it keeps working exactly as usual, with the same number, groups and chat history.
You keep your number and your WhatsApp
With an eSIM you keep both your home number and your WhatsApp. The eSIM is added alongside your existing SIM and doesn't replace it, so your home number stays on the phone for the whole trip.
WhatsApp is linked to your phone number, not to the SIM card you're using for data. So it keeps working just as it always does, with the same number, the same groups and the same chat history.
How does it work in practice?
- Your home SIM stays in the phone and identifies you on WhatsApp.
- The eSIM provides the data plan at your destination.
- WhatsApp simply uses the internet coming from the eSIM, and sends and receives messages as your home number.
For friends and family back home, nothing changes. They see you on the same number, and messages arrive as usual.
What works on WhatsApp with an eSIM?
- Text messages, voice messages and photos
- Voice and video calls
- Groups, Status updates and location sharing
All of these go over the internet, so they count against the data plan you bought, with no roaming charges. (One exception: in some countries, such as the UAE, WhatsApp calls are blocked. See WhatsApp calls in Dubai.)
What do you need to do to make it work?
- Don't touch WhatsApp. There's no need to change your number, log out or reinstall.
- When you land, set the eSIM line as your data line and turn on data roaming for it. Leave data roaming off on your home line. The full guide: how to turn on data roaming for the eSIM only.
- On iPhone, choose your home number for iMessage and FaceTime if the phone asks, so they keep working with your usual number too.
Mistakes to avoid
- Deleting and reinstalling WhatsApp abroad. Reinstalling means verifying your number again, which can get complicated when you're not on your home network.
- Choosing "Change number" in WhatsApp. There's no need. Your home number stays yours.
- Taking your home SIM out of the phone. There's no reason to; it stays in the phone alongside the eSIM.
- Turning on data roaming for your home line. WhatsApp may then use it for data, and roaming charges follow.
Frequently asked questions
Will my friends see a new number?
No. On WhatsApp you appear with your home number, just like at home.
Can I receive regular SMS and calls on my home number?
Your home line stays on the phone, but regular calls and SMS abroad are charged at your home carrier's rates. Check with them before your flight. WhatsApp calls, on the other hand, go through your data plan. More on using two numbers at once.
Does this work with WhatsApp Business too?
Yes. WhatsApp Business is also linked to your phone number and works over the internet, so it keeps working as usual.
When should I install the eSIM?
At home, before the flight. The plan only counts from activation at your destination. All the details are in when to install an eSIM: before the flight or after landing?
